Welcome to the Transistor Cafe Web-space!
Here you can find the various websites and projects of members in a
delightfully retro style. Many of these websites are designed to work just
as fine on a modern browser as they are on dated PDAs and vintage browsers
over dial-up connections.
Each resident's web-space is their own creation, embracing the 90s to
early 2000s spirit of the web. Personalization, expression, and fun.
Member's are encouraged to design their pages to work well even over a
dial-up modem connection, where modern websites could take tens of minutes
to load, these should take less than 30-60 seconds depending on the speed of
modem used. Though members can stray from this as needed. On that line of
though, compatibility with older browsers, old devices, and the like is
encouraged. Most of these pages will render just fine on browsers like
Pocket Internet
Explorer on Windows CE, text-mode browsers like
Lynx,
Netscape Navigator
2.0 on the Macintosh, or
Microweb on a PC/XT.
Residents will be granted simple FTP (or SFTP) access to their web-space
where they can build up their own static site however they like. Want to
create everything by hand in Notepad or your other
favourite text editor? Or perhaps you
want to go the graphical route with Microsoft FrontPage or Macromedia
DreamWeaver? You could also be fancy and use a
static site generator or other script
locally and upload the results to your page. You can even embrace peak 90s
with
animated
under-construction GIFs, marquee tags, and background MIDI music if you
wish.
